The Costa Blanca Summer Secret: Why Torrevieja is the Ultimate Quiet Base for Exploring Southeast Spain

Visiting Spain for many Brits and many of us across the world is somewhat of a yearly religious pilgrimage.

Spain offers many versatile destinations, from the party haven of Ibiza.

Traditional cities like Seville.

all the way up the coast to metropolises with beaches like Barcelona.

To the capital Madrid

Spain is notoriously overcrowded in these spots from April until the end of August.

I’d like to bring to your attention the southern Costa Blanca, with Torrevieja as a base, and use Alicante as a base for day trips between all these cities.

Torrevieja and Alicante are incredibly valuable for travellers looking for emptier beaches more affordable summer escape that still serves as a perfect launchpad for day trips

The Vibe: Slower, Cheaper, Quieter

The Mediterranean coast is packed. Torrevieja is laid back, authentically Spanish and incredibly cheaper

Food 🍔: Between €10-15

Drinks 🍹: Between €3 for larger and €10 for spirits

Location Strategy: Launchpad

The High-Speed Rail: From Alicante’s train station, you can hop on a high-speed train and be in Madrid or Valencia in under two hours.

The Bus Network: Torrevieja’s central terminal offers cheap, hourly shuttles up and down the coast, meaning you don’t even need to rent a car to explore.

Alicante-Elche airport is huge for budget flights making it cheap to fly into

Torrevieja and Alicante are on the south coast. This makes it perfect for day trips to all the surrounding cities. Photos from my journey

The Verdict: Don’t spend your summer holiday waiting in lines. Base yourself somewhere quieter like Torrevieja, enjoy the slow pace, and use the money you saved to take easy day trips across the region.
